Chapter 46 Zhang Heng’s Parents
Lin Huai settled matters with Zhang Chunlei and brought him back to class. He also forced Zhang Chunlei to write a transfer request to another college. In the midst of all that, Zhang Chunyu also requested for a transfer upon realizing that his elder brother was transferring to another college. Now that his elder brother was transferring, he was afraid of being bullied in class, even if he was not Lin Huai’s target.
Dao Zi, on the other hand, was taken into custody. Although the discipline master forbade anyone from leaking news about the events that transpired, somebody still made a police report in secret. At first, the snitch wanted to trap Lin Huai, but Lin Huai’s actions were considered self-defence. Even though he knocked out a group of people, the group of people were the ones that surrounded and attacked Lin Huai first. Furthermore, for some unknown reason, the college was on Lin Huai’s side. They claimed that the fight was a usual brawl among the students, and that Lin Huai did not initiate the fight.
Dao Zi, on the other hand, was in a different boat. He stabbed Zhang Heng in public where there were multiple witnesses. If the police did not get involved, the matter could have been resolved in private through some form of compensation. However, now that the police were involved, it was no longer a small matter.
After lunch, Lin Huai invited Wei Qimian to the field where there was nobody. They took a seat.
Wei Qimian looked at the depressed Lin Huai and understood Lin Huai’s thoughts. She hesitated and eventually sighed. “I know you want me to help resolve the Dao Zi situation. However, Dao Zi did stab someone with a dagger in front of multiple witnesses. There was no justification for his actions. I could put a word in as far as punishment in college goes, but there’s nothing I can do about the police. I have asked around. He would probably be sentenced to around three years of imprisonment or detention.”
Lin Huai frowned and said, “No matter what, he stabbed Zhang Heng because of me. I have to think of a way to bail him out.”
Wei Qimian sighed and thought about it. Then, she said, “You would have to resolve things on Zhang Heng’s side. If you could convince Zhang Heng to resolve the matter in private and to not press charges, I could get my father to put in a word and things would resolve without prison sentences.”
“Alright, I will do just that.” Now that there was a plan, Lin Huai heaved a sigh of relief. He would have to instruct Dao Zi not to stab and injure people as he pleased in the future—even if his name was Dao Zi[1]—especially not in public with no justification.
Wei Qimian said, “Then let’s work both angles together. You can resolve Zhang Heng’s side and I will settle the Public Security Bureau’s side.
“Okay.” Lin Huai stretched his arm and draped it across Wei Qimian’s shoulders. Then, he pulled her into his arms and gently said, “Sorry to trouble you this time around. I need you to first resolve my problem, then settle the situation with Dao Zi. Ouch! I was expressing my love, why did you pinch me?”
Wei Qimian squirmed out of Lin Huai’s embrace. She blushed and glared at him. “You can thank me, but why are you taking advantage of me? Why are you hugging me?”
Lin Huai’s eyes widened and he complained, “I feel so wronged. It was to thank you. That’s why I let you enjoy being hugged by a handsome young man. Do you have any idea how many girls in this world would love that? Such a privilege for you and yet you pinch me.”
“Gosh! So thick-skinned!” Wei Qimian was going to reprimand Lin Huai but burst into laughter instead. “Look at you. How could you have such huge contrasting personalities? Usually you look like a thug, and then in class you look like a genius that knows it all. Just now on the field, you looked so righteous and I almost believed that you were a saint. Which personality is your true self?”
“All of those are my personalities. Looks like you don’t know me well enough. Do you want to dig deeper and understand me further?”
“No!” Wei Qimian rejected confidently. Then, she glared at Lin Huai.
Lin Huai sighed. “College students nowadays are incredible. You must be thinking of sex again.”
Wei Qimian was speechless. She finally realized that when it came to squabbling, there was no beating Lin Huai. She could not bring herself to be as shameless as he was.
Lin Huai stood up and smiled. “Alright, let me request for leave so I can visit Zhang Heng in the hospital.”
“Alright,” Wei Qimian agreed. “You settle the issue on Zhang Heng’s side, and I will do the same for Dao Zi.”
Lin Huai signalled OK. He thought of visiting Wang Hongwei after visiting Zhang Heng in the hospital.
Lin Huai hailed a cab. However, instead of going straight to the hospital, he headed to a bank first. He withdrew some money, and then hailed another cab to the hospital. On the way, he called Pu Chengji to give him some instructions. He wanted everything to be well prepared. As for the outcome, it was up to God’s will.
Lin Huai did not rush upstairs upon arriving at the hospital. Instead, he smoked a couple of cigarettes downstairs and waited for Pu Chengji’s call. Once he received the call, he smiled confidently and walked into the admissions department.
Zhang Heng’s ward was very close to Wang Hongwei’s ward. One of them was a leader in the computer science major, whereas the other was from the negligible bottom tier. Yet, it was ironic that both of them were admitted into the hospital at the same time.
Lin Huai walked into Zhang Heng’s ward and knocked on the door. A gruff voice said, “Come in!”
Lin Huai pushed the door open and walked in. There were three people in the ward and Zhang Heng was lying on the hospital bed. Next to him sat a couple. The middle aged man looked like Zhang Heng. Thus, there was no need for introductions and Lin Huai could tell that this was his father. The woman, on the other hand, looked sweet and gentle. It was hard to imagine such a ferocious and strong man being married to such a timid and gentle woman.
Lin Huai smiled and said, “Uncle, aunty, I am Zhang Heng’s college mate. I am here to pay him a visit.”
Zhang Heng’s eyes popped out and there was a fearful look in his eyes. He asked uneasily, “It’s you! Why are you here?”
From the look in their child’s eyes, it was obvious that this polite, well-mannered kid in front of them was not friends with their child.
As such, Mr. Zhang said, “I am sorry, I think it’s best that you leave and not disturb my child’s rest.”
Lin Huai smiled. “I am sorry, but I have to disturb him no matter what as I have another mission to complete.”
Lin Huai saw that all three of them were looking at him. So, he took a pile of money from his bag. Then, he smiled and said, “Here is 10,000. Consider it Dao Zi’s compensation. I hope that Zhang Heng can forgo this grudge and forgive Dao Zi’s mistake. After all, as college mates, it won’t be rainbows and sunshine everyday. We are bound to fight sooner or later. What’s important is that we reconcile after that.”
Mr. Zhang exploded with anger at the casual way Lin Huai referred to the way his child was stabbed. His eyes widened. Furious, he rushed toward Lin Huai. He looked like he was prepared to beat Lin Huai up if not for Mrs. Zhang’s interference.
Mrs. Zhang hugged her husband and looked at Lin Huai, saying, “Leave quickly. There is no way we are forgiving the kid that stabbed my son. This is too much. If the wound was any deeper, it would have claimed my child’s life. There is no way any child’s parents would withdraw the charges.”
“That’s right!” Mr. Zhang said. “Our hospital bills must be compensated, and the punishment will assume as usual. Otherwise, we would sue even the police!”
“Ah, why the temper?” Lin Huai said with a smile. “Uncle, you are an elder, and as someone from a younger generation, I have to be courteous. Therefore, I will not take your rudeness personally.”
Mr. Zhang was really mad and was going to beat Lin Huai up. However, Zhang Heng knew that Lin Huai was no pushover. Thus, he quickly said, “Father, don’t lay hands on him. Otherwise, we will be the ones at fault.”
Mr. Zhang thought about it and agreed with his child. Then, he relaxed his fists. Lin Huai said, “Not bad! The stabbing has made you smarter. Zhang Heng, I think it’s a good thing that you were stabbed!”
Mr. Zhang solemnly said, “Dear, go and fetch the nurse to chase this man out!”
“Oh, alright!”
Mrs. Zhang was about to step outside when Lin Huai suddenly smiled and said, “There is no hurry. Why don’t you wait for me to complete my sentence before chasing me out. If you all still refuse to resolve this privately afterward, then I will not force you and make a move myself.”
Mr Zhang snorted. “Fine, go ahead.”
With a serious look, Lin Huai said, “This time around, your child is injured and the only thing on your mind is to catch the culprit. However, do you know what kind of person your son is? Do you really think there is nothing wrong with your son? If there is nothing wrong with him, why would Dao Zi stab him? Your son is a gang leader in the computer science major and has numerous henchmen following him around. Numerous students have been beaten up by him. As his parents, do you all know any of this?”
Mr. Zhang snorted. “So what? Each matter on its own. This time around, my son was stabbed and injured. That’s why I want the culprit in jail!”
Lin Huai could not help but laugh. “I thought you had no idea what was going on. Turns out this is the attitude you have. So your son may bully other people, but is not allowed to get bullied. I see that you are very protective of your son. That being the case, I will not feel bad anymore.”
Mr. Zhang frowned and asked, “What do you mean?”
Lin Huai looked at Zhang Heng and smiled. “Zhang Heng, I will not hide things from you. The students you bullied have written a joint letter. Once the letter is submitted to the Ministry of Education and they see that so many people have reported you, they would expel you. No other college will accept you either. However, the joint letter is now in my hands, and it’s my call whether to submit it or not. Similarly, the outcome depends on your choice, and you may choose whether to withdraw criminal charges against Dao Zi or not. You are free to make your own decision.”
Upon completing his speech, Lin Huai walked toward the door. The expressions on their faces changed. The threat was serious enough to shock them.
Zhang Heng suddenly shouted, “That’s impossible! They wouldn’t dare to do that!”
“Wouldn’t dare?” Lin Huai laughed. “I have beaten Zhang Chunlei, and the big boss of the computer science major is me. With my backing them up, there is nothing for them to fear.”
Zheng Heng kept quiet at Lin Huai’s words. His face turned pale and he was in despair. He was familiar with the students’ behavior. Now that Lin Huai was so powerful, they would not dare to offend him. If things were as Lin Huai said, he was in deep trouble.
Seeing that Lin Huai was about to push the door open and leave, Mr. Zhang suddenly shouted, “Wait!”
Lin Huai stopped and turned around. With a dejected and dismayed look, he offered, “I will talk to the Public Security Bureau. I will not press charges anymore.”
Lin Huai smiled and took large strides toward Wang Hongwei’s ward.
[1] Dao Zi means “dagger” in Mandarin. This suggests that his name was consistent with his character. Therefore, it was ironic that a person named “dagger” was told not to stab anyone.
