Chapter 31 Lin Huai’s Story
“Go away! Not today. My head still hurts.”
Lin Huai could tell from Li Qianqian’s expression that she was still not feeling well. Deeply concerned, he asked, “You aren’t suffering from a concussion or anything like that, are you?”
“It is not that bad,” Li Qianqian replied and zoned out. There was fear hidden in her eyes and she sighed softly. “I’m not seriously injured, just startled. Can you spend the night here?”
“Err, might you take advantage of me tonight?”
Li Qianqian glared at Lin Huai.
Lin Huai smiled cheekily. “No problem, as long as you don’t. Do you have groceries? Let me cook you a meal.”
Li Qianqian glanced up at the clock and saw that it was already noon. She hesitated for a moment and said, “Just some simple noodles will do.”
“Haha, you worried about troubling me? Don’t worry, it’s fine.”
“Um, I was thinking of having something simple for lunch, and then feasting on dinner, courtesy of you.”
“That works. Just give me a moment, I’m going to cook.”
“Alright… I’ll be resting in the room.”
Just as Li Qianqian stood up, Lin Huai rushed over to support her. He reprimanded her sternly, “Why are you trying to walk by yourself? Here, let me help you.”
Li Qianqian flirtatiously replied, “If what you want is to see my room, you could have just asked.…”
“Cough cough, if you seduce me anymore, I will not be able to control myself.”
Li Qianqian blushed briefly and kept quiet. Lin Huai supported her into her room. As she opened the door, a clean and tidy room came into sight. There was no special girly scent. However, the room was spick and span.
Lin Huai took a quick glance around the room and said, “It is very clean.”
Li Qianqian proudly replied, “Yup, I work as a secretary, so naturally, I need to be meticulous. This has spilled into my personal life.”
Lin Huai gave her a thumbs up and praised, “Awesome. That’s really impressive. Whichever family you marry into is blessed.”
Lin Huai helped Li Qianqian onto her bed and said, “Since you’re injured, you get to be the uncle…”
Li Qianqian stared at him and spat, “You are the uncle!”
“Hey!” Lin Huai gave her a naughty smile and said, “Consistently trying to seduce your uncle, that’s incest.”
Li Qianqian was rendered speechless. She realized that Lin Huai was a smart mouth and she could never outdo him. Moreover, he was more dirty-minded than she was. She chose to remain silent.
Lin Huai laughed, “Not talking anymore ah? Then I shall prepare lunch so that you may experience my cooking skill.”
Lin Huai walked out of the room and the sound of his footsteps became distant.
Listening to Lin Huai’s faded footsteps, Li Qianqian heaved a sigh of relief. She looked perplexed, but then a smile creeped onto her face. She murmured, “I cannot believe I actually brought him into my house. I’m letting myself be vulnerable. Why did I slip up, just because of his good looks? Sigh, handsome guys really do have an advantage… I wonder if he needs a reminder about certain things.”
Worry and fear snaked into Li Qianqian’s thoughts.
Lin Huai had lunch ready within a short span of time. He brought the noodles into the room, and Li Qianqian devoured the steaming hot noodles. She praised profusely, “With this cooking skill of yours, whoever marries you is blessed.”
“Yup, whoever marries you is blessed; whoever marries me is also blessed. You and I might as well start a family.”
“Pfft, don’t mess around. You are so much younger than I am. I do not wish to be old and faded while you are still a young boy. Moreover, guys age slower than girls.”
Lin Huai laughed. Of course it was a joke, who would’ve thought Li Qianqian would take it seriously.
Li Qianqian continued seriously, “We are seeking warmth from each other. You are not interested in school, and I need security. Thus, it is a symbiotic relationship. As for our personal lives, we live on parallel trajectories. I don’t mind if you see somebody.”
Lin Huai laughed. “Okay, okay, do you want another bowl of noodles?”
“Yes….”
They filled their stomachs and set the bowls aside. Then, Lin Huai lay down on Li Qianqian’s bed.
“Don’t mess around… I am still not well.”
“Haha, okay okay. I am simply here for a short rest. Are you not going to allow me rest even though I’m tired from all the free labor I’ve done for you? Have a heart.”
“Fine….” Li Qianqian knew that underneath all that earnest lay some ill intentions. However, perhaps it was his good looks, or her loneliness, she chose not to fight back. She whispered softly, “You are not allowed to touch me.”
“I won’t, I won’t,” Lin Huai replied and lay next to Li Qianqian. He took a deep breath and sniffed at her, feeling a little restless.
Li Qianqian’s heart raced non-stop. Although she had evolved into a liberal, she used to be very conservative. She was twenty-seven this year and other than the university ex-boyfriend, she had never been with another man. It’d been a few years since she’d gotten intimate with a man and it was making her nervous.
Li Qianqian thought of Lin Huai next to her and worried that he would be up to no good. Therefore, her solution was to distract him. She proceeded with small talk and said, “You’re such a good cook. Do you cook often? Where did you gain your skills?”
“I learned it from a neighbor.” Lin Huai laughed. “When I was young, I lived with my mum. To afford my school fees, she worked day and night. As such, I did my best to help with the cooking after school. I used to be pretty bad at it. However, I had some very talented neighbors back then. Some knew martial arts, a few could cook, and one knew everything there was to know about music, chess, literature, and art. I learned so much from them.”
Li Qianqian was surprised. She asked, “So many capable neighbors? Why have I not met any of them? Speaking of which, you lived with your mum as a young boy? What about your dad? He… Am I intruding?”
“Haha, it’s fine.” Lin Huai sounded nonchalant but his eyes were filled with sorrow. With a stiff tone, he replied, “My dad disappeared off the face of the earth when I was only a few years old.”
“He passed away?”
“No.” Lin Huai took a deep breath. “How I wish that were the case. At least then I would know that he didn’t abandon my mother and I. However, what really happened was that he claimed to have errands to run, left the house, but never came home. Two years later, my mother and I received a picture. It was an intimate photo of him and another woman in each other’s arms.”
Li Qianqian sympathized with him and apologized, “I’m sorry, I should not have brought up sad memories.”
“Haha, it’s fine. After he left, my mum had to bear responsibility for all the affairs of the home. Within the first two years, we were constantly bullied by a bunch of hooligans. At that time, I could not protect my mother and had to watch helplessly as she got bullied. I hated it so much that I swore to build myself up and protect everyone around me.”
Li Qianqian asked, “This must be why you became a bodyguard, right?”
“Yes, it was my obsession since I was young, and I finally made it,” Lin Huai related proudly.
Li Qianqian asked, “What about those hooligans? Did you punish them?”
“No.” Lin Huai looked doubtful as he continued. “After that, those hooligans disappeared too and never reappeared. By the time I learned to hold my own, and wanted to take my revenge on them, they were nowhere to be found.”
“Oh.” Li Qianqian smiled. “No matter what, you have achieved your ambition.”
“Yeah, I did finally fulfill my ambition. To be honest, helplessly watching my mum get bullied by those hooligans caused me to really hate gang members. I did not think that these would be the people I have to deal with everyday in school.”
Li Qianqian’s eyes filled with worry, yet she smiled and said, “Anyway it’s only a two months mission. Two months will fly by very quickly, and then you don’t have to worry about any of these anymore. There is no point in being nosy.”
“Yup, don’t mess with me and I won’t mess with you,” Lin Huai frowned and replied. “However, I cannot be ignorant about everything that’s going on. I would eventually get caught up in it. I’ve never felt so strongly about a mission before. This time around, this tiny school just might be the turning point of my life.”
Li Qianqian’s worries grew further. Yet, she burst out laughing and said, “You are exaggerating, aren’t you? You’re overthinking.”
Lin Huai gave it some deep thought—he didn’t want to get mixed up with those students. He could not help but laugh. “That’s possible… Maybe I am overthinking it. Ah, I shall not think too much. Let’s both take a nap.”
With that, Lin Huai reached his hand under the blanket and inched toward Li Qianqian’s body. He started touching her.
Li Qianqian screamed and landed a foot on Lin Huai’s chest, kicking him off the bed. He shouted, “Holy sh*t, you’re murdering me!”
Li Qianqian blushed and shyly replied, “I am not mentally prepared yet. Wait for tonight.”
Lin Huai rolled his eyes and said, “All we’ll do is snuggle and sleep, nothing else. Given your current condition, what else can we do at night?”
“I can… I can use my hands!”
Lin Huai froze, followed by a surge of excitement. He breathed rapidly and said, “Alright, use your hands then….”
“Then just chat with me now. Don’t you bully me.”
“I promise… I promise not to bully you….”
Lin Huai was not compelled to rush anything. The anticipation for the night was enough. As such, he spent the afternoon talking to Li Qianqian and taking a nap. As evening approached, Lin Huai rushed to the kitchen to cook Li Qianqian a meal. Once again, she praised the three dishes and soup he had prepared.
When the sky darkened, Lin Huai took a shower. After that, he left the bathroom with just his underwear on and sneaked into Li Qianqian’s bed…
