Chapter 29 Li Qianqian’s Provocation
Mrs. Wang lifted her head and glanced at Lin Huai and his friends. She quickly dried her tears and said with a lukewarm tone, “Oh, Hongwei’s friends. Please take a seat.”
It was obvious that Mrs. Wang’s hospitality was nothing like Mr. Wang’s. This could be due in part to the way despair in life had grinded out her enthusiasm.
Lin Huai smiled and said, “Aunty, we are all Wang Hongwei’s roommate. We are also his close friends. What did the doctor say? Is he going to be alright?”
Mrs. Wang was surprised and followed with a desolated sigh. Life was weighing her down and it was written all over her face. She helplessly replied, “According to the doctor, he suffered a mild concussion. There is also concern over infection of the wound. At this point in time, it looks non-fatal, but nobody knows what might happen if it isn’t properly treated. Therefore, Hongwei has to be hospitalised for daily observation. He should be discharged in around ten days or so.”
Lin Huai probed, “The hospital bill….”
Mrs. Wang replied, “Yulan College has too many fights and injuries every year. Therefore, the college can only cover for a small portion of the bill. We have to fork out the rest of the expenses. They plan to ask the family of the kid who beat up my son to pay us compensation. However….”
Lin Huai understood that the bill must be an overwhelming one, too large for the Wang Family to foot. He looked at Wang Howei and noticed that he had shifted his glance. Therefore, he didn’t say anything more.
For these poor, impoverished families, they no longer had any money, and all they had was their self-respect. Therefore, even at times like this, they refused to talk about money. If they were to lose even their self-respect, what was left in their lives?
Lin Huai did not continue with his line of questioning. Instead, he asked Wang Hongwei how he was feeling. He also asked if the roommates could stay behind to help. After a brief chat, Lin Huai and friends left the family with the fruits. They also turned down Mr. Wang’s kind offer of a meal.
After walking out of the hospital, Fan Hanning said, “Wang Hongwei’s father was rather warm toward us, but his mother had a lukewarm demeanour.”
Lin Huai replied, “Enough, their son is in bad shape as it is. Of course they’re not in the mood for chit-chat. They are probably depressed. You guys go ahead. I have some things to take care of. I will be back later in the day. “
Wu Jun said, “Alright, Brother Huai. Then we’ll make a move!”
Lin Huai waved his hand and watched as they crossed the road. He then headed back to the admission department of the hospital by himself. Wang Hongwei’s family was obviously still anxious over the payment of the medical bill. Lin Huai decided to offer them some help, even if not a lifeline out of poverty. After all, such an encounter had happened to his dormmate. He couldn’t bear to just sit idly.
Furthermore, this dormmate of his had regarded him as a friend, and Wang Hongwei was the kind of person who offered genuine friendship to a person he regarded as friend. On these grounds, Lin Huai couldn’t just sit idly by.
Again, Lin Huai walked up the stairs. As Mr. Wang disappeared into the ward, he took advantage of the situation and slipped into the doctor’s office. Then, he was momentarily stunned and asked, “What are you doing here?”
On top of a middle-aged attending doctor of about forty sitting in an office chair, Lin Huai also saw a gorgeous and seductive woman sitting on the couch. She was an old acquaintance of Lin Huai in this city. She was none other than Wei Sihai’s beautiful lady secretary, Li Qianqian.
Li Qianqian had a gauze wrapped around her forehead and a pale complexion. She looked a little dazed. Upon seeing Lin Huai, she too paused before asking, “What are you doing here?”
Lin Huai offered her a bitter smile and replied, “I am here to help someone foot his medical bills. What about you? Who injured you?”
“I fell down. It was an accident.” Li Qianqian shifted her glance and replied hesitantly.
Lin Huai’s gaze subconsciously shifted to Li Qianqian’s fair neck and the finger marks on it. She fell down and injured herself? Then where did the finger marks come from? Does she think I’m an idiot? However, it was none of his business. If she wasn’t willing to talk about it, then he shouldn’t ask. Lin Huai walked toward the attending doctor and asked, “I have a friend hospitalised here. His name is Wang Hongwei.”
“Oh, Wang Hongwei. He is my patient,” the doctor replied. “His medical bill has not been cleared. He would probably be discharged within two days.”
Lin Huai frowned and said, “His condition is unstable. Wouldn’t getting discharged endanger him?”
The attending doctor replied impatiently, “What does him being in danger have to do with us? If something happens to him within the hospital, then of course it’s the responsibility to the hospital. But since he cannot afford the medical bills, why should we take responsibility for him after he is discharged?”
Lin Huai took a deep breath and asked, “How much do they owe the hospital?”
The attending doctor did the maths and replied, “They still owe 8,234 bucks. If they don’t settle the bills by tomorrow, he will be discharged.”
Lin Huai whipped out a bank card and said, “Draft out the bill, I will settle it. However, do not tell my friend who paid for this.”
The doctor gave Lin Huai a complicated look. He drafted a bill and passed it to him. Lin Huai looked at Li Qianqian and asked, “How’s your situation?”
“I can head home now.”
“Oh, just give me a moment. I will send you home.”
“Err, I drove here.”
“Then I’ll give you an opportunity to send a handsome man home.”
Li Qianqian didn’t answer and threw Lin Huai a cold look. I had never seen such a thick-skinned individual.
Lin Huai quickly settled the bills and walked out with a receipt. He passed the payment slip to the doctor and reminded him to keep it a secret. Only then did he leave with Li Qianqian. However, what Lin Huai failed to notice was that as they walked toward the end of the corridor, Mr. Wang was walking back out of the ward. Mr. Wang saw their backs and a puzzled look crossed his face. He murmured to himself, “Wasn’t that Hongwei’s classmates?”
Lin Huai and Li Qianqian exited the hospital and settled into Li Qianqian’s car. Li Qianqian asked, “Where should I send you? The school? Or are you going elsewhere?”
Lin Huai stretched and said lazily, “I haven’t actually seen much of Tongcheng City yet. Why don’t we go shopping? Your company will not be free. In return, you’ll get to enjoy my attractive looks.”
Li Qianqian could not help but complained, “Did your family not teach you shame?”
Lin Huai laughed loudly. “Have you not heard of the saying that thick-skinned people are undefeatable? So how do I become the best bodyguard in the world? I start by being shameless.”
“What? Best in the world? Please don’t brag!” Li Qianqian’s smile returned to her face and she said. “But I really cannot keep you company. See the injury on my forehead? Do you have the heart to force an injured person onto the streets?”
“Fine, then I owe you a chance to appreciate my good looks. That will have to wait till next time. This time around, I will accompany you home.”
Keeping mum, Li Qianqian held onto the steering wheel and started to drive. With her eyes on the road, she asked, “Are you really going to my house and not the school?”
“Oh, Wei Qimian is home for the weekend. Why would I go back to school and face those few old men?”
Li Qianqian burst out laughing, “Why are you kids calling each other old men? You all are still so young.”
Lin Huai flashed a sinister smile and replied, “Like I said, if you don’t believe me you can always try.”
As he said that, Lin Huai’s sight shifted to a certain part of her body.
Li Qianqian blushed and she groaned, “Do not attempt anything bad in my house.”
Lin Huai gave a cheeky laugh and his gaze roamed freely across Li Qianqian’s figure. Li Qianqian was wearing a black lacy dress; her slim legs covered in black stockings. Lin Huai stared at those smooth stockings and couldn’t control himself. He wanted to feel them. Oh shit… did I actually touch them?
Lin Huai’s hands brushed her stockings twice and he immediately withdrew his hand. He awkwardly said, “I did not mean for that to happen. Your car is too spooky. Is there a ghost here? Why did my hands move for no reason?”
Li Qianqian blushed and grumbled, “You… I’m sending you back to school.”
“Don’t… I am actually a gentleman.”
“Then why are you so indecent?”
“My god.” Lin Huai could not help but air his grievance. “Can the relationship between a male and female be considered indecent? Human populations prosper because we have always fought to reproduce.”
Li Qianqian rolled her eyes at Lin Huai. Yet, she could not help but burst out laughing. Then, she blushed, making her more attractive and seductive.
Lin Huai blurted, “Are you a demon?”
“What demon?” Li Qianqian asked coldly.
“An attractive little demon.”
Li Qianqian was displeased at times, bashful and happy at times. With Lin Huai, she was constantly teased like a lovestruck little girl. She was initially gloomy and depressed. And while she worried about the handsome and naughty Lin Huai, she also wanted to just let loose, even to the point where she kind of wanted Lin Huai to do something. After all, Lin Huai was an interesting person, not to mention good looking!
Although he wore shabby old clothes, Lin Hua was actually more attractive than Xuan Yuzhai. If not because he had offended so many people within his first few days of school, plus the fact that he was close to Wei Qimian, who knew how many girls would have pounced on him? Girls couldn’t help but feel inferior to Wei Qimian. As for Li Qianqian, she was also a visual animal by nature. Nonetheless, she did not care how people dressed. A woman like her had seen far too many well-dressed yet useless men.
Err… although she did not know the depth of Lin Huai’s character, at least he was attractive!
The car neared a housing estate full of apartment buildings. Lin Huai, upon noting that it was a middle class area, asked, “You live here?”
“Yes. Is it up to your standard?”
“Err, it’s pretty good. Whoever lives here must be rich. Looks like you might as well provide for me.”
“Tsk, you earn a million from a casual mission. Who provides for whom?” Li Qianqian threw Lin Huai a seductive look and gently teased him. Her words had a deeper meaning that would spark one’s imagination.
“Oh? Let me make you my mistress then.” Lin Huai slowly reached for her legs and brushed them.
