Chapter 27 Feng Jingnan’s reminder
When the computer science major freshmen on the first floor saw Lin Huai walking down the stairs, they could not help but retreat to either side of the corridor to steer clear of his aura. There, they stood with their eyes wide opened as Lin Huai walked past them and made his way to his dorm room.
Everybody was staring at him with mouths agape, followed by a sigh of relief.
“Oh my god, he came down safely!”
“Lin Huai is the man. He has become quite the legend!”
“Watch it, call him Brother Huai. From now on, we must not address him by his name anymore. Instead, we refer to him as Brother Huai.”
A complicated look could be seen on Zhang Chunyu’s face. All these powers should have been his. However, they were now Lin Huai’s. Having said that, he did not dare be vocal about his thoughts as Lin Huai was really too powerful. Initially, he expected Big Lei to teach Lin Huai a painful lesson, but it came as a shock to him that Big Lei couldn’t do much. Even though he did not know what transpired upstairs, that Lin Huai had walked down from unscathed was an undeniable truth.
The dormitory supervisor, Feng Jingnan, came downstairs. He started scolding, “What are you standing around here? Get back to your room this instant and go to bed. Whoever dawdles will spend the whole month cleaning toilets!”
The students immediately dispersed and were gone in a hurry. Feng Jingnan looked at Lin Huai’s room, his gaze darkened.
When Fan Hanning and his friends were back in the dorm, Lin Huai was already lying on his bed. Wu Mengjie said emotionally, “Brother Huai, that was so cool. Your aura was so strong. All the computer science major freshmen were shocked by you. Take it from me, Brother Huai, if you only say the word, those freshmen will call you Big Boss. You will be everything to them, not even second to Zhang Chunlei.”
Wu Jun seconded this notion. “That’s right, Brother Huai. If that’s really the case, given the strength of our numbers, we can topple Big Lei with just one command from you!”
Lin Huai turned around and replied lazily, “I am not interested in becoming the top dog.”
Now that Lin Huai had said so, they did not pursue the matter any further.
Right at this moment, there was a knocking on the door. Fan Hanning walked over to open it. When he saw Pu Chengji standing there, he immediately ushered him in.
Lin Huai glanced at Pu Chengji. “Why are you here at this hour?”
Pu Chengji regaled him with a smile and said, “I wanted to rush up with you. You were too awesome, and too majestic. Unfortunately, my legs were jelly at the time.”
Upon hearing Pu Chengji’s words, Lin Huai did not get mad. Instead, he laughed heartily. In fact, everybody in the room laughed.
Wu Mengjie laughed and related, “Don’t blame yourself, you were not the only one with jelly-like legs. Even my legs turned into mush.”
Pu Chengji glanced at Wu Mengjie and sniffed. “Since we were all alike, then it’s not embarrassing anymore.”
Again, the room erupted into peals of laughter.
Pu Chengji ran to Lin Huai’s bedside and whispered in his ear. “Brother Huai, did you notice the looks on the freshmen’s faces? They were in awe of you. Just give the order, and many will flock to become your underlings.”
Did Pu Chengji come all the way just to tell him this? Lin Huai let out an exasperated sigh and said, “I really don’t have any interest in becoming the top dog. Besides, my reputation is bad. A lot of people still think I did all that stuff to Niu Haijiao, and yet you want the outside world to think of me as the residential hooligan?”
Pu Chengji replied, “So what if you’re a hooligan? Besides, in this college, anybody who eats and spends as they pleased are considered hooligans. It doesn’t matter even if you don’t match Zhou Dahu, the Big Boss of computer science. Even Brother Di or Big Lei’s level is good enough. The amount of protection money they collect is amazing. By the end of your four years in college, you would’ve saved up a tidy sum.”
Pu Chengji’s speech stirred up some excitement in the dormitory. Truth to be told, the modern-day college student understood the concept of money very well. You needed money to indulge in food, drinks, and women too. No matter what, money was a necessity. So even if you were able to flaunt your powers or authority in college, you still needed the most important thing—money!
Lin Huai was not interested. He only wanted to become Wei Qimian’s bodyguard for two months. He did not want to be a Big Boss. Besides, both he and Wei Qimian hated the chaos of the college. Now to add more havoc to it? Not to mention the trouble he’d gotten into within the few short days since his arrival. However, he had to do what he did. Lin Huai was unable to give up on his friends just to remain low-key.
Lin Huai said, “That’s enough. I really am not interested. All of you can stop visiting that possibility and go to sleep.”
“Oh, ok.”
The disappointment was obvious.
Lin Huai continued, “However, if anything happens in this dormitory, I hope we can work together like we did today. Wu Jun, Wu Mengjie, and all of you… I would have been even happier if you guys had come with me upstairs just now. I would have guaranteed your safe return.”
Lin Huai’s words made them hang their heads in shame.
Lin Huai smiled and said, “The whole situation will take time. We can’t expect things to instantly change the way we want it to. Alright, good night.”
Pu Chengji snuck out of the room. The students went to bed one after another. However, their adrenaline continued to pump from all that drama. As a result, they were restless and unable to sleep peacefully.
On the other hand, Lin Huai slept like a baby. According to his investigation, Wang Hongwei’s life was not in imminent danger. This was enough. The only problem was that Wang Hongwei’s family was financially wanting. Hence, somebody had to compensate him for his injuries. Luckily, the suspect was apprehended. Thus, Wang Meng’s family bore the cost, as he was the one who struck Wang Hongwei.
The next morning, when Lin Huai left his bed, he noticed that his washbowl was filled to the brim with warm water. He sighed exasperatedly and said, “You guys, stop it. I am not the Big Boss.”
Wu Jun answered, “Brother Huai, it’s too late. We have already elected you as our Big Boss.”
Lin Huai shook his head helplessly, his expression indifferent. If they want to recognize me as their Big Boss then let them be. Besides, whether I admit to it or not is another matter entirely.
Lin Huai washed up. Naturally, somebody poured the water away for him. It was a weekend and Lin Huai had nothing to do. All he had planned was to await further news from the Wei family. However, before there was any news from the Wei family, Lin Huai decided to visit Wang Hongwei first. Wang Hongwei’s condition was quite serious, and although his life was not in danger, there was still plenty to worry about. This was also the reason why Lin Huai nearly went berserk yesterday.
Lin Huai tried to learn the hospital in which Wang Hongwei was admitted and his ward number. However, upon hearing this, the other students in the dormitory were clamoring to follow. Lin Huai did not stop them. Besides, dormmates were supposed to take care and help each other. It was better this way.
Some of them were wondering about obtaining information on Wang Hongwei’s whereabouts when there was a sudden knock on the door. Wu Jun walked boldly toward the door and opened it. What greeted him was a gigantic-looking, wall-like shadow at the front door. Wu Jun’s face drained of color as he stammered in fear, “Brother Feng, how can I help you?”
The person standing outside the door was none other than the dormitory supervisor—Feng Jingnan.
Feng Jingnan took one look at Wu Jun and invited himself in. He went straight for Lin Huai. Although the infamous Feng Jingnan struck terror in the hearts of many, Lin Huai remained seated comfortably on the mattress and did not show any signs of fear. Besides, his bad impression of Feng Jingnan was due to the chaotic state of the dormitory. Previously, Lin Huai was surrounded by Big Lei and his gang at the front door. If not for Xuan Yuzhai’s sudden appearance, a fight would’ve been imminent. At that time, Feng Jingnan did not step up to calm the situation. What kind of supervisor was he?
Feng Jingnan saw that Lin Huai was still sitting on the mattress, uninterested in entertaining him. However, he was not angry. He made himself at home and sat beside Lin Huai, smiling. “You’re medical-skilled, huh? Last night at the hospital, the doctor stitched up Wang Hongwei’s wounds. He expects Mr. Wang to be admitted for more than a week, give or take. The bills have been borne by the college for now. Your head lecturer and I made absolutely sure that he was out of danger before we left. According to the doctor, if it wasn’t for your timely action, even if Mr. Wang was dragged to the hospital, he would have lost too much blood, therefore putting his life in danger.”
Lin Huai casually replied, “Those are useful skills I learned before this.”
Feng Jingnan smiled. “I admire what you did last night. You were so manly and righteous.”
Lin Huai laughed heartily. Then he added meaningfully, “I seemed to recall that you had something different to say yesterday.”
“Oh, that’s because I didn’t want you to go looking for trouble. The second-year students upstairs are very cruel. In the past, after Zhang Chunlei took some students under his wing, he would take them off campus to fight, with the intention of training their fighting skills and courage. All of them were wounded many times over, but yet they were trained.”
Lin Huai was caught off guard. His eyes flashed with amazement. He commented faintly, “This Zhang Chunlei guy has quite something going on.”
“How else would he be able to instill dread in the sport majors? There is something you must know. In the past, those from the sports faculty thought the students from other faculties to be below them. Hence, Zhang Chunlei’s ability to change that perception was entirely owed to his own capabilities.”
Lin Huai casually replied, “I don’t care how capable he was. As long as he keeps from provoking me, then that will be his greatest achievement.”
Feng Jingnan was not surprised. He laughed. “You are a reckless guy. Of course you have the means to be one. However, here’s a piece of friendly advice. You are not Zhang Chunlei’s equal yet. Even the best tiger could not hold off a pack of wolves. I know you are a good fighter. I can tell that you are ruthless and you have guts. Although I haven’t seen you in action before, I believe in my judgement and observations. If you were to fight him one-on-one now, I am pretty sure you’ll win. The only person who may pose a threat to you is one of his high ranking lieutenants who goes by the name of Daozi.”
Lin Huai thought Feng Jingnan was ill-informed. He didn’t know Lin Huai had already defeated Dao Zi.
Feng Jingnan’s gaze suddenly became distant, as if he was deep in thought. Then, he expressed meaningfully, “ However, I must tell you this. You are still no match for Zhang Chunlei. If you were to get into a fight with him, other than the dozens of underlings under his wing, there will be others on his side.”
Lin Huai asked, “Who?”
“The sports major!”
Lin Huai’s eyes narrowed for a brief moment. He recalled the incident with Zhang Hongdi last night and thought of the ambivalent relationship he had with the sports major.
