To Astoph Ilberk, Reynok was only a thorn to his side.
Pak! Paak!
The violence began back when he was just beginning to recognise objects. Reynok had learned about fists before language. Every day, he was punched and kicked until at some point he stopped feeling pain. When hungry he would be given scraps, and when dressed he had rags for clothes. His clothes were even worse than what the servants wore. Even when his hair was messy, his father wouldn’t let anyone care for him.
“My lord, you still haven’t named your heir…”
Only at the age of 10, did the boy realise that he had no name. Furthermore, the butler who had suggested to the Duke to name his son died after receiving a violent punishment.1
The child, with one look at the pitiful old man, ran to his father’s study and opened a book.
‘Flowers, trees, butlers, and maids all have names. Why am I the only one without one?’
“A brat like you doesn’t need a name.”
Gulp.
At the fact that he didn’t know his name, his eyes filled with cold tears. He didn’t even know why his chest was stinging as if his heart was being stabbed. But the pain subsided after a while and he became numb.
That’s right, a name. For anyone else, they would have been named by their father. But he didn’t have anyone like that. That was why he named himself.1
Reynok.
Reynok. Reynok. Reynok.
Excited to finally say his own name, the young child became teary-eyed. But the name left a bitter taste in his mouth.
It felt as if someone should be here, but there was only emptiness in front of him.
He didn’t know how else to describe it. He didn’t know whether he was feeling sorrow, sadness, or pain. He didn’t even understand why his servants cry when his father beat them too. Even if he was bleeding, he wouldn’t know if he was hurt.
So, when he received his long-awaited name, he thought he would have finally been able to have feelings like pain in his heart.
He might not have known at the moment, but his plan was futile.
Just like that, the young boy grew up to become a young man. Without him knowing, at some point, people have started calling him a madman. A madman who was cruel and could easily step on others for his goal.
It was the Grand Duke Astoph Ilberk that had made him this way. His father had not once called Reynok by his name even until he died in his hands.
“You are not my child.”1
Astoph told him he was born from a devil’s seed.
“You will become the Ilberk family’s ruin, brat.”
So, he lived on with the curse that one day he will wipe out the Ilberk family.
… The child that had been born from a devil’s seed had purple eyes just like his father.
“You’re not even a beast. But in the end, you’re going to bite my neck off?”
Even as he stabbed his father in his gut, he felt no regret till the last moment. Killing the Grand Duke had been more anti-climactic than he would have thought.
This was why it was impossible for me to meet adult Knox in the morning. But why?
Why did it give me such an ominous feeling the last time I held his hand?
Don’t tell me, this was all happening because I held his hand? It couldn’t be. Maybe it was that bright light I saw at the abandoned house? No, that couldn’t be too. Why was I being anxious like some main character that made the wrong choice in a story?
The most suspicious was this necklace. I cannot ignore the blinding light I saw. But what kind of language was written in that book? As I pondered further, I thought my head was going to explode.
“… Amy?”
At that moment, a small hand grabbed me. I was surprised to see fingers at the corner of my eyes.
“Knox! You’re awake?”
Knox didn’t answer and shook his head. Geez, just looking at his panting frustrated me. Quickly, I soaked the towel and squeezed it before putting it back on his forehead.
“Knox, you’re very sick today.”
“… Sick?”
Knox was someone who didn’t know that he was in pain, even after he had been cut by glass. I explained his condition slowly. He seemed to not entirely understand but he looked into my eyes and nodded slowly.
“Sick…”
“Yes, sick. So, just lie down and take a good sleep, okay?”
I expected it but Knox just laid there, without sleeping. It should be natural for this little boy to feel burdened as even in adult form he couldn’t help but to collapse.
Imagine my shock when I had to clean his wound, that started to bleed this morning.
I would’ve been at a loss if I hadn’t remembered how to treat wounds from my sister.
“Knox, do you feel uncomfortable anywhere? Your back, or your hands… Huh?”
“…”
He was shaking.
I didn’t know if he could feel the pain but pretended to be oblivious to it, or if he really couldn’t feel it. But honestly, at times like this, I preferred the Knox in adult form who would just say what was on his mind straight up.
I felt sorry for him. He could only blink his eyes innocently when he gets hurt or sick.
Tak.
“… Where are you going?”
“Huh? Ah… I was going to get a new towel and bring you some porridge from the kitchen. Just wait for a moment.”
“…”
“Knox? You have to let me go so I can leave.”
He shook his head.
While still panting hard, Knox didn’t let go of my clothes.
“Don’t leave.”
Why would he look at me with those eyes, that would only make my heart waver? I never said I was going to run away. I just told you that I was going to the kitchen.
Maybe it was because I thought that I was really abandoning him but I felt something poking at my heart.
It was shameless but I removed his sheets. After wrapping him around with his sheets, I lifted Knox up.
“Huk. Are you considered light or heavy? I had never carried a child before so I wouldn’t know.”
“Amy?”
“Don’t get hurt.”
His cheeks were then dyed slightly red.
“… I’ll get hurt for you.”2
T/N: Have a great week ahead everybody!!
